There is something about Summer that makes people realize that their garage is a mess.
Here’s my theory:
Summer is the season when we go outside and do out-doorsy things. Many of our out-doorsy accessories are stored in the garage because they are often big, or because they are only used seasonally.
Garages are great because they hold so much stuff and we don’t have to look at it all the time! Unfortunately it is an area often overlooked until we need something from it. So after months of just storing all sorts of things in the garage to take care of later, those very things now hinder our access to the items we need in the summer!
When is the Best Time to Organize the Garage?
Trouble is, it’s darn hot in the garage in the summer! It may be the time of year when the garage captures our attention, but it’s not the time of year when we really want to do something about it! In the cooler months when we are back to our regular routines we have forgotten about the mess, and it is no longer that important, and we may let it go another year. So here’s a simple suggestion for you to remember the garage in the cooler months.
Put it on the calendar now, for a time in the future.
Put Garage Organization on Your Calendar
Plan ahead by scheduling time in October to get the garage organized! It will not seem as pressing once summer is over, but you will be glad you took action to get it organized. Set aside time to give it the attention it deserves BEFORE you need something from the garage again – like Christmas or other holiday decorations.
In the meantime, you can start gathering containers to properly store the items in your garage. Assess whether or not you require additional shelving – a common problem in many garages. A slow acquisition of these things is easier on your budget and enables you to find the perfect solution. Then in October, plan a weekend, or few days throughout the month, where you are committed to the task of organizing the garage. If you feel you need help, ask your family to lend a hand, or better yet, hire a professional organizer (like me!) to assist in the assessing, planning and execution of organizing your garage.
Once the garage is properly organized, keeping it maintained will be easy and it should remain organized for quite some time!

- Set aside time in October to organize the garage.
- Assess needs and purchase containers and/or shelving.
- Recruit help!
